Orthodontics is a specialty in dentistry that focuses on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities, such as crooked teeth, bite misalignments, and jaw positioning issues.

Orthodontic treatment improves the appearance of your smile, enhances oral health by making teeth easier to clean, and corrects bite issues that can cause chewing problems, jaw pain, or excessive tooth wear.

Orthodontic treatment can benefit people of all ages. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7, but teens and adults can also achieve great results.

There are several types, including:

  • Metal braces: Traditional and highly effective.
  • Ceramic braces: Tooth-colored and less noticeable.
  • Clear aligners: Removable and nearly invisible.

Treatment duration varies depending on the severity of the issue and the type of braces used, but it typically ranges from 12 to 36 months.

You may experience some discomfort or soreness when braces are first applied or adjusted, but this usually subsides within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage any discomfort.

Most patients visit their orthodontist every 4 to 8 weeks for adjustments and to ensure treatment is progressing as planned.

Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods such as popcorn, gum, caramel, and nuts. Cut hard foods like apples or carrots into small pieces to prevent damage to your braces.

Brush your teeth after every meal and floss daily using tools like orthodontic flossers or water flossers. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are essential.

After braces are removed, you’ll need to wear a retainer to maintain your new smile. Your orthodontist will provide guidance on how often to wear it.
